Choice Boards

Choice boards are organizers that contain a variety of activities. Students can choose one or several activities to complete as they learn a skill or develop a product. Choice boards can be organized so that students are required to choose options that focus on several different skills.

For example, students are given a choice board that contains a list of possible activities they can complete to learn about volume. For example, students can choose to complete an inquiry lesson where they measure volume using various containers, use a textbook to read about measuring volume, or watch a video in which the steps are explained. The activities are based on the following learning styles: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile. Students must complete two activities from the board and must choose these activities from two different learning styles.

Multiple Intelligences

Multiple intelligences refers to a theory of intelligence developed in 1983 by Howard Gardner, a professor of education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Howard Gardner defines intelligence as the ability to solve problems, fashion products, or provide services that are valued in a culture. Based on that definition, he has identified at least eight different intelligences. They are:
  • linguistic
  • logical-mathematical
  • musical
  • spatial
  • bodily-kinesthetic
  • interpersonal
  • intrapersonal
  • naturalist

  • Walking a Radian Kinesthetic explorations of the radian in a classroom setting help students internalize the concept.
  • Early Secondary Mathematics: Teaching Sums of Angle Measures: A Kinesthetic Approach A different approach to teaching students how to measure the sums of angles of various polygons. They employ kinesthetic activities with easy-to-follow diagrams and instructions and provide activity sheets for recording activity experiences.
  • Sharing Teaching Ideas: Function Notation Auditory, visual, symbolic, and kinesthetic approaches for introducing function notation in algebra. The use of a computer algebra system is one component of this lesson.
  • Sharing Teaching Ideas: Demystifying Systems A multi-day introductory lesson on linear systems in two variables that utilizes kinesthetic and technology-based activities to create mathematical connections to the methods of graphing, substitution, and linear combination.
  • Illuminations Unit: Human Conics Students use sidewalk chalk and rope to illustrate the locus definitions of ellipses and parabolas. Kinesthetics, teamwork, and problem solving are stressed as students take on the role of focus, directrix, and point on the conic, and figure out how to construct the shape.
